Portrait Plasma Skin Regeneration Comes To San Diego

May 17, 2006

The same technology used in fluorescent lighting and plasma TVs can help you look years younger.

This brand-new weapon against aging is now in San Diego.

Caroline Kehoe's deep wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots have disappeared, and it only took 15 minutes.

"I had loose skin all under my eye -- you could grab it," said Kehoe.

The power of plasma gave Kehoe's aging skin a more youthful look.

It's not a laser, but a new antiaging technology called "portrait plasma skin regeneration."

What comes out of a hand piece is a form of ionized energy -- the same kind of energy that forms a lightening bolt. It delivers heat to the skin, 10News reported.

"This is using high-energy gas plasma to deliver heat to the skin," said dermatologist Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick.

It not only heats the surface of the skin, but heats collagen beneath the surface, causing skin to tighten and skin imperfections to literally vanish.

"You get very gradual tightening of the skin over a period of three or four months," said Fitzpatrick.

After a few days the surface of the skin crusts and peels similar to a chemical peel, but Fitzpatrick said the big difference is your skin completely heals in a week.

"It tightened up all my skin here and pulled it all up," said Kehoe.

But the best part is the skin continues to rebuild itself for months after the treatment.

"Every month you can see yourself looking better and better," said Kehoe.

Portrait skin regeneration can be used for acne scars, discoloration, sagging skin and precancerous skin lesions.

Usually only one treatment is needed.

The FDA-approved procedure costs between $3,000 to $5,000.

Fitzpatrick is conducting further studies with this technology.
