What Is Gynecomastia?

You might think gynecomastia is a rare condition by the name alone. But it’s actually extremely common among men of all ages. Here are some facts you should know:

  • The word “gynecomastia” is a medical term that means “woman-like breasts.”
  • According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 40% to 60% of men are affected by some level of gynecomastia.
  • While some men experience gynecomastia as a result of medication or illness, most cannot identify a direct cause.

This condition, marked by the appearance of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin on the chest, is often the result of a mix of weight gain, genetics, and testosterone imbalances, making it notoriously difficult to improve with diet and exercise alone.

What Is the Best Way To Treat Gynecomastia?

Through gynecomastia surgery, plastic surgeons remove breast tissue or fat with liposuction, excision, or a combination of both. In the past, surgical removal of the excess tissue was the norm. Now, however, many men are treated with liposuction with excellent results, almost no scarring, and better post-operative contours of the skin and chest wall.

Considering Male Breast Reduction Surgery in San Diego? Here’s How To Determine If You’re a Candidate

If you are a man who has excessively large breasts or is concerned with sagging tissue on the chest after losing weight, you may be a candidate for a male breast reduction. This procedure is intended to give you a flatter chest with a more masculine contour.

Ideal candidates typically struggle with these issues:

  • Breasts that are larger than they feel comfortable with
  • Irritation or chafing under the breasts
  • Puffy or enlarged nipples and areolas
  • Drooping or excess skin around the chest after weight loss
  • Self-consciousness when wearing certain clothes or taking their shirt off

The best candidate for this surgery is a healthy male near his ideal weight. While heavier men can also benefit, this surgery is not for correcting obesity. Men who have firmer, more elastic skin will enjoy the best results. Any man who is taking steroids is not a good candidate for this surgery.

How Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

Male breast reduction surgery is performed using general anesthesia in our QUAD A-accredited surgical suite. You’ll be monitored by a board-certified anesthesiologist from start to finish.

Liposuction for gynecomastia is relatively simple. Your surgeon will make a very short (½ inch or less) incision in an area that is easily hidden, such as:

  • Along the edge of the areola
  • In the fold under the breast
  • In the axilla (underarm area)

Then, your surgeon will suction excess fat from under the skin. In more severe cases, your surgeon may recommend surgical removal of the breast tissue. This requires an incision on the chest wall.

Both types of surgery usually improve any existing asymmetry. Like women’s breasts, the size of each male breast might be slightly different in size and shape, and your surgeon will do their best to correct any differences.

What Are the Risks of Male Breast Reduction?

As with all surgery, there are risks. General surgical risks include inflammation, infection, hematoma, scarring issues, swelling, bruising, and numbness. Risks specific to male breast reduction include seromas, loss of or reduced nipple sensation, and breast contour changes. Medical complications, although rare, include allergic reactions, pulmonary embolism, heart conditions, and hyperthermia.

What Is Male Breast Reduction Recovery Like?

When you have a cosmetic procedure performed under general anesthesia, it’s important that you plan for recovery time and limit your activities. Here’s a bit more about what you can expect.

A Few More FAQs About Male Breast Reduction Recovery

How long is male breast reduction recovery?

You’ll likely be able to resume your normal daily activities within 1 to 2 weeks.

Will I go home the same day?

Yes, you’ll go home the same day, but you’ll need someone to drive you there after the procedure. We always recommend having someone with you for the first 24 hours following any surgical procedure with anesthesia.

Is male breast reduction recovery painful?

You will likely feel some discomfort after the surgery, but we’ll prescribe an oral medication to keep you as comfortable as possible.

When can I work out after gynecomastia surgery?

Hold off on aerobic activities for 4 to 6 weeks, and talk to your doctor about when you can resume any weightlifting activities.

Will I have scars after male breast reduction?

Your incisions will be placed along natural contours of your chest so they’re easily hidden. Avoid exposing your scars to the sun for at least 6 months, as sunlight can cause them to darken. If exposure to the sun is unavoidable, be sure to use a strong sunblock.
