Understanding Breast Enlargement

Breast enlargement is intended to give you larger and shapelier breasts. If you have one breast that is noticeably smaller than the other, breast enlargement surgery can usually equalize the size and come close to matching the shape. An additional procedure that would enhance the result of a breast augmentation is a breast lift, if the breasts are saggy in addition to being small.

Breast augmentation is a surprisingly straightforward and safe surgery in the hands of experienced surgeons. At La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre, we perform breast augmentations on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. Newer pain control techniques reduce post operative discomfort to very acceptable levels.

Breast augmentation incisions may be in the breast crease, around the nipple, or in the armpit. A saline or silicone implant is inserted under the breast tissue, or under the breast tissue and the underlying muscle.

When it comes to plastic surgery, almost every patient has a different story and motivation for deciding when the time is right. For Carla, a mother of five, ranging in ages from 14 to 26 years, she had many reasons. “I think having plastic surgery was always in the back of my mind, but being able to justify spending that money on myself was difficult.” Never one to really lack self-confidence, Carla says two life-changing moments made her change the way she felt about her body. “About 20 years ago I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Many patients ponder the thought of having cosmetic surgery for years, until one day, they pick up the phone and make their consultation appointment. For Meaghan, a 32-year old mother of an adorable toddler, her experience was vastly different.

"I never thought much about my body because I was blessed with a large chest. I always felt comfortable and confident." Like many new moms, while experiencing the joys of childbirth and breastfeeding, she found herself with a body she did not quite recognize. "I literally went down several breast sizes after I was done breastfeeding. It was like a complete volume loss."
